Easy Mexican Ground Meat Recipe for Tacos or Burritos

Think you don't have any time to make a good, home cooked meal? Try this recipe for an easy, fast, authentic-tasting experience.

This recipe is fast and easy, and it tastes better than packaged taco seasoning, and it does not contain any monosodium glutamate (MSG). The amount of time needed to make this dish is not much more than one would spend preparing the ingredients in the kits for tacos or burritos, and it is a lot cheaper than buying a kit for burritos or tacos.

This dish can be made with any ground meat, such as turkey or 90% ground beef, including venison or bear meat. This recipe goes well with tacos, burritos, or taco salad. The amount of spices is merely a guideline. Add more or less to suit your tastes.

Easy Mexican Ground Meat Recipe for Tacos or Burritos

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. ground meat
  • 1 tsp. salt (can be omitted if desired)
  • ¼ - ½ tsp. Pepper
  • 1 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin
  • 2 tsp. garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. dried thyme
  • ½ tsp. oregano
  • 3 tsp. cornstarch or other type of thickener
  • ¾ cup water

Cooking Directions:

  1. In a large skillet, brown the ground meat on medium high flame until cooked through and there isn’t any more pink or red spots in the meat. If there is any liquid or fat that is on the bottom of the pan, drain the meat in a screen colander or other type of strainer and place back in pan.
  2. Mix in spices with the meat. Take cornstarch and mix it in with the ¾ cup water until thickener has dissolved. Add water mixture to the pan and heat and mix until the water has thickened with the beef and entire mixture is heated through.

Serving suggestions:

  • Serve with taco shells, hard or soft. You can put lettuce, tomatoes, chopped onions, salsa, taco sauce, cheese, sour cream, or whatever you like on top of your tacos. You can also convert your tacos into a taco salad with all the fixings, and serve with tortilla chips on the side or crumbled over the top of the salad.
  • You can also use this meat for burritos and use the above suggestions to stuff your burrito. The results are just as pleasing.
  • Jazz up your rice with this meat, tomatoes, onions, cheese, and any other condiment suggested above for a delicious surprise and a filling meal.
  • For a variation on the original recipe, try throwing in ½ chopped onion, 4 cloves chopped garlic, 1 fresh chopped tomato, and/or 1 chopped green pepper before putting the ground meat in the pan. Brown with either a nonstick cooking spray or 1 tbsp. olive oil or canola oil first, then put in the ground meat, and proceed with the rest of the cooking directions.
  • This can be a lowfat meal if desired. Keep all ingredients below 10% fat for a healthier meal.
