You don’t have to tell your family a thing. Serve them these chocolate chip brownies for dessert, and you’ll secretly be feeding them whole grain goodness and much less sugar than traditional recipes and brownies that come in a box, and they won’t be the wiser. This recipe is a winner all around. It’s low fat and has a lower sugar content thanks to the agave nectar. Although agave nectar is high in fructose, it is sweeter than honey, although it is not quite as thick as honey, but thicker than oil, which is why so little of it can be used to replace the oil and dry sugar in this recipe. The result is dense little squares of chocolatey heaven. This is a recipe everyone will enjoy, and on top of it being healthy, it is vegan and diabetic friendly.
Healthy Low Fat Chocolate Chip Brownies
Ingredients:
- ¾ cup whole wheat, whole grain flour
- ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons agave nectar
- 4 ½ teaspoons egg replacer (such as Energ-G)
- 6 tablespoons warm water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ cup chocolate chips
- Nonstick cooking spray
Cooking Directions:
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Place the wheat flour into the bowl. Sift cocoa into the bowl with the flour, then stir until completely mixed. Combine the water and egg replacer, and whisk until frothy, then add to flour mixture. Add agave nectar, vanilla, and chocolate chips. Mix until all of flour is completely coated.
- Batter will be thick and sticky. Spray a small square baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Spread batter evenly on bottom of pan from edge to edge. Hake brownies for 23-25 minutes until batter is no longer mushy in the center and a knife comes out clean when put in the middle.
- Allow to cool and cut into squares.
Cooking Tips:
This recipe can be doubled. If doubling the recipe, make sure to use a bigger baking pan so the batter spreads thinly and evenly along the bottom and reaching all sides of the pan. It will rise a bit, but don’t be concerned if it is dense and fudgy. It doesn’t detract at all from the taste.
Healthy Alternatives:
- Try adding ¼ cup of walnuts or hazelnuts instead of the chocolate chips, or even try adding ¼ cup of nuts and ¼ cup of the chocolate chips together.
- Try this recipe with carob powder and carob chips instead of the chocolate. Dark chocolate chips can also be used. Each will give its own flavor to the brownie.
